We introduce the notion of linear relative entropy between multipartite states, whose symmetric form is shown to coincide with the square norm distance measure. When this symmetric form measures the distance between system state and its closest classical state, it is just the geometric quantum discord. We thus show that discord based on relative entropy is linked to geometric discord through a change of entropy measure. We then compare, in an open two-qubit system subject to two different evolutions, the dynamics of correlation quantifiers based on relative entropy and on square norm distance finding different qualitative behaviors, not consistent to each other, in both quantum and total correlations. These results point out that different distance measures cannot be equivalently used in the description of the dynamics of correlations.
