Mars Interior: Models
Scientific paper
The mean value of the dissipative factor Qμ(r) for the interior of Mars is estimated by using data about the secular acceleration of Phobos. For this purpose, weighting functions have been calculated for the second- and third-order tides, the convolutions of which with Qμ(r) determine the lag angles for the tides raised by Phobos, and consequently, the secular accelerations of Phobos. The low values Qμ ≍ 60 for a model of Mars with a liquid core and Qμ ≍ 40 for a model of Mars with a solid core for a tidal period T2 ≍ 2×104sec indicate a dependence of the Q-factor for the Martian interior on period in the long period range. Use of a power law to estimate the Q-factor in the seismic period range T ≍ 1 - 200 sec gave Qμ ≍ 110 - 120 and 80 - 85 for models with liquid and solid cores at T ≍ 200 sec, and Qμ ≍ 250 - 270 and 170 - 190 at T ≍ 1 sec for the same models. In the opinion of the authors, these results favor models of Mars with a liquid core. The effect of third-order tides on the secular deceleration of Phobos has been estimated, which turned out to be <10%.
