Large-amplitude magnetic pulsations on ion inertial scales are often observed in space plasmas, but theoretical explanation for the structures is still controversial. We discuss a possible mechanism of generation of the pulsations different from classical plasma instabilities. It is shown that when dispersion significantly dominates dissipation, the competition between dispersion and wave steepening process may lead to transformation of a large-scale magnetosonic structure to a train of solitons. This kind of longitudinal filamentation is possible for both slow and fast magnetosonic structures. We argue that described scenario may particularly easily occur in weakly collisional and cold plasmas.
