The evidence is reviewed by comparing the data obtained from synthetic samples with those derived from natural samples of magnetic minerals present in rocks. It is shown that there are many issues which are still unresolved. Some suggestions are made concerning the future direction of rock magnetic research, such as the need for intensified studies of natural samples. The aim of this note is not to disclose anything new, but rather to open up some lines of thought and draw attention to questions and ideas that may have been lurking in our minds from the very beginnings of paleomagnetism.
