The article describes the discovery of a system of five thin faint rings around Uranus during photoelectric observations of the planet's occultation of the ninth-magnitude star SAO 158687 from NASA's Kuiper Airborne Observatory. Events leading to the unexpected discovery are reviewed, the airborne observations are recounted, and excerpts from a tape recording of the conversation aboard the Observatory are provided along with pre- and post-occultation light curves. Simultaneous observations from Perth Observatory in Australia are also discussed. It is noted that five different groups at four observatories have thus far reported occultations of SAO 158687 by the rings, which are all extremely narrow.
