Nonthermal continuum was discovered by the Prognoz-10 satellite at frequencies which are unusually high for this type of emission: 1486 and 992 kHz. The observations were made in the nighttime sector of the north polar region of the Earth's magnetosphere. The continuum propagates away from the Earth in the form of beams, and there are diurnal and seasonal variations in the intensity: the saturation level is 10-17W/m-2·Hz-1. The region where the radiation is generated seems to be localized at geocentric distances of <2 RE in the nighttime ionsopheric trough a mid-latitudes.
