The propagation of an internal gravity wave in shear flow is analyzed. The use of characteristic surfaces as a new coordinate enables a first order solution to be corrected. It is shown that a contact discontinuity always appears at a level lower than the critical level, that is, before the horizontal velocity and vertical wavenumber become unbounded. The results are in accord with the observed existence of very high vertical gradients of horizontal velocity in the lower thermosphere.
