Directional dissolution of willemite has been studied over a wide pH range at 30°C. The advance of dissolution front along [0001] and the opening of etch pits on basal planes indicated that steady-state directional dissolution for pH = 0-3 followed a rate law of rate = Ka n H + ( in mol/m 2 h ), where the rate constants of K are 1.51, 0.2, and 0.32; and the values of n are 0.88, 0.62, and 0.5 for [0001], fast-dissolving <10 0>, and <2 0> direction, respectively. The dissolution rates along these directions have the following relationship: [0001] > <10 0 <2 0> for pH < 2, but the order was reversed for pH > 2. Except at the tip of etch pits, dissolution appeared to be surfacereaction controlled. Causes of the anisotropic dissolution and the pH dependence were discussed in terms of the active lattice site, the structure, and the energetics of willemite planes.
