A new algorithm is proposed for the directional analysis of magnetotelluric observations based on the determination of the dispersion of the wave packet as a whole. This approach makes possible a sufficiently reliable determination of the characteristics of the horizontal propagation of geomagnetic pulsations and of the specific resistance of the upper layer sigma by a variational method on the basis of an analysis of individual pulsations at single points.
