ULF waves are a powerful agent in the magnetosphere, being linked to acceleration, transport and loss of energetic particles over a large region from the radiation belts out to field-lines linked with the auroral zone. We present results from a bounce-average electron dynamics model in which magnetic field lines are perturbed by global scale ULF perturbations. We find that MHD fast waves in this model can directly cause modulations in the population of electrons precipitating into the ionosphere, simply by the conservation of their first and second adiabatic invariants (M and J). Particular values of M and J for electrons mirroring at the top of the ionosphere are perturbed by changes in the magnetic field carried by ULF waves, and oscillate in phase with the waves. The functional form of the electron phase space density expressed in terms of M and J therefore gives rise to modulations in the precipitating population. We discuss the effectiveness of this mechanism for electron loss relative to the VLF wave modulation mechanism discussed by Watt et al. (this meeting). We also consider how the direct modulation of electron precipitation may be expected to vary with MLT based on simple particle conservation arguments, and compare against riometer observations [Spanswick et al., Ann. Geophys., 2005].
