Measurements of the polarization and line shape of the Lyman alpha hydrogen geocoronal emission obtained on board the D2A Tournesol satellite are compared with theoretical predictions based on the use of Kockarts-Nicolet (1963) profiles. It is shown that, on the day side, the polarization and the reduction factor are independent of the solar radiation flux, and depend on the local conditions near the exobase. Consequently, measurements of these parameters can be used to evaluate the day-side concentrations at 500 km as well as the corresponding exospheric temperatures.
