Previous studies have proposed the development of field-aligned electrostatic potentials as a result of the convection of hot (keV) magnetospheric plasma. The development of large, field-aligned potentials appear necessary to explain observations of 40 keV, field-aligned O+ beams in the ring current [Sheldon et al., 1998]. In an experimental effort to reproduce the development of field-aligned potentials, a terrella experiment has been conducted. In an 18" bell jar, cylindrical magnet is charged and immersed in a DC glow discharge plasma. Diffusion, rather than convection, in this experiment is thought to be responsible for the formation of a ring current-like plasma distribution that includes a field-aligned potential structure. The mapping of space charge potential with a floating probe will be presented, along with the result of using micron sized dust as tracers in this environment. The development of a minimum in electrostatic potential at the magnetic equator is vividly revealed by the formation of an equatorial dust ring, not unlike that found at Saturn. The dependence of the field-aligned potential structure on the environmental parameters of the experiment will also be presented and their implication for magnetospheric systems discussed.
