A digital filtering technique is developed by analogy to the optical blurred-mask procedure and applied to astronomical images, demonstrating its usefulness in cases where the image is to be segmented by intensity levels into connected domains after processing. Images of granules on the solar surface, globular clusters, Venus and its atmosphere, and a solar prominence are treated; and the physiological implications of the blurred-mask filter are discussed.
