The unusual diffraction properties of laser speckle and related structures generated by stimulated rotational Raman scattering (SRRS) from nitrogen in long air paths with collimated, large aperture beams are discussed. Convincing evidence for the four-wave parametric gain suppression of SRRS and enhancement of nonlinear diffraction by Raman-induced Kerr effect in this high Fresnel number geometry has been obtained. These phenomena significantly influence the beam filamentation and speckle structures observed in the near and far fields. Present observations are contrasted with previous SRRS experiments at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory using the Nova Laser.
