A Hill's-equations framework is used in the present investigation of the possible origin of planetary rotation in successive planetesimal collisions to yield an expression for the rotational angular momentum of a protoplanet brought by planetesimals/unit time. Using these results, a quantitative evaluation is undertaken of the rotation of the terrestrial planets, based on planetary accumulation theory. A giant impact hypothesized for the last accumulation stage, which is the alternative candidate for the origin of planetary rotations, entails an impact body of more than 1/10th the present terrestrial mass in order to impart earth-moon angular momentum. Such a large body is very unlikely to have collided with the protoplanet.
