The maximum-likelihood method was used to objectively fit the diameter-frequency distribution n(D) of H II regions in several galaxies. Excluding extraordinary large diameter samples, the n(D) is found to be fitted best by an exponential law for most galaxies and the fitted parameters are meaningful. After adopting an initial luminosity function for H II regions and allowing for selection effects, the observed n(D) is equally well fitted by both the isothermal expansion model and the 'bubble' model.
