Cosmological γ-ray bursts are the most energetic phenomena in the universe. The γ-rays are believed to be synchrotron photons emitted in ultra-relativistic shocks produced by very powerful explosions. We have recenly developed a theory which explains the nature of the magnetic field in such shocks as being generated via the two-stream (Weibel) instability. Such fields have very distictive properties, which affect the spectral characterisrics of the emergent radiation. Recent observational data are in excellent agreement with the predictions of the theory. Given reasonably good-quality spectra, one can do a precise diagnostic of the properties of a plasma in cosmological shocks and, perhaps, conditions in the interstellar medium as well.
