Measurement of self-reversed line shapes can be used to determine experimentally the degree of deviations from local excitation equilibrium of low lying atomic levels in arc plasmas. The proposed diagnostic procedure is applied to the measurement of the excitation temperature difference profile between low (6 3P) and high lying levels of mercury using the mercury visible triplet lines emitted by a high-pressure dc arc plasma. Possible causes of the observed nonequilibrium are suggested.
