The Mileura Widefield Array (MWA) low frequency demonstrator consists of 500 antenna stations operating in the frequency range from 80 to 300 MHz and will be deployed at Mileura, Western Australia (26.4S, 117.5E). The science objectives of the MWA are to observe the epoch of re-ionization in the early universe through red- shifted hydrogen, measure magnetic field and density structures in the heliosphere, and image solar radio bursts. Ionospheric calibration techniques that will be applied to the measurements at these low frequencies will yield observations of ionospheric structure with high resolution above the array. The MWA demonstrator is a joint US-Australia project led by MIT, with US funding support provided by the NSF and AFOSR. Development plans include an initial 32-station prototype system to be deployed in late 2007, followed by the full array which is expected to begin scientific operations in early 2009. Some initial measurements of solar bursts with fine time and frequency resolution will be shown from the deployment of three antenna test stations at Mileura in 2005. The solar, heliospheric and ionospheric science goals, instrumentation development, and operation plans will be described in this paper, and the collaboration plans for engaging the broader science community in the use of the array's observations will be outlined.
