We are studying morphological distinctions between two types of astrophysical jet experiments. One exhibits flow of material driven from a surface into an ambient medium. The other shows a dense clump of material impulsively impacting an ambient medium. Both the ambient medium's response and the evolution of the jet material can be observed with a field of view (FOV) of several square millimeters and a resolution of 20 μm. Area backlighting with an imaging detector achieves the required resolution, but the FOV is limited by the size of the backlighter and the spatial uniformity of its emission. We are developing point-projection backlighting on the OMEGA laser system in order to meet the requirements of resolution and FOV. The properties of Cl, Ti, and Fe backlighters emitting in the 3 to 8 KeV range were characterized by imaging grid and step targets. Grid targets measure the dynamic range and modulation transfer function for spatial frequencies constrained by the grid spacing and line widths. Step targets characterize the emission spectrum and use a strip of high-Z material to determine the line spread function.
