The depths of shower maximum of cosmic-ray showers have been determined
in the sea-level size range from 100,000 to 10 million with use of
atmospheric Cherenkov techniques. The mean depth has been found to
increase rapidly in the middle of this range, suggesting a change in the
mean primary composition from heavy to light nuclei.
