A review of data on extensive air showers generated at particle energies higher than 1 million TeV provides evidence for a faster attenuation of the showers than predicted by models where multiple muon production by nucleon/nucleus interaction varies proportionally to E with an exponent of 1/4. The fluctuations in the showers are found to be greater than expected.
