The Engineering Services Section, within the Testing Division, Mechanical Systems Department, at the European Space and Technology Centre (ESTEC) is currently developing and evaluating the performances of a measurement system suitable for motion detection/tracking. The system is based on a digital high-speed camera for the image acquisition, and image processing techniques for the numerical analysis of the phenomenon under measurement. The strong point of the system is the contact less way it performs measurements. The aims of the activity are the evaluation of the limitations of the proposed measurement system, the evaluation of the increase of effectiveness in the environmental testing of spacecrafts and the disclosure of the possible applications for this system. Several test campaigns have been completed. This paper will summarize them, describing the set-up, the problems encountered, the post-processing phase and showing and analysing the results of the investigations. A final evaluation of the advantages/drawbacks of the system will be presented, and the future activities for this measurements system will be mentioned.
