The present Ag-based reflective coatings are useful in both the visible and the IR, and exhibit not only high optical efficiency but high resistance to both terrestrial storage/prelaunch and space environments. Excellent stability to adhesion, as well as abrasion resistance and aqueous environment corrosion resistance, are demonstrated for Ag protected by a 200-A layer of Al2O3 and an 800-A layer of Ta2O5. The results of thermal shock cycling of up to 1000 cycles in the -45 to +70 C range indicate no deterioration of the coating. The presence of the Al2O3 layer is noted to furnish an excellent barrier to UV degradation.
