Second and fourth order coefficients and second degree coefficients of tidal harmonic development for the M2 and S2 semidiurnal waves are calculated from orbit perturbation data for GEOS 1, GEOS 3, and three Transit satellites. The results differ from the values obtained from numerical models, possibly because the models do not take the earth's elasticity and the effect of ocean charge into account. Parameters determined for the M2 tide are used to calculate the secular acceleration of the moon in its orbit. When the estimated contributions of the O1 and N2 tides are added, the value agrees with the observed value. It is concluded that the major part of the tidal energy dissipated in the earth-moon system is associated with the oceans rather than with the mantle.
