Observations of energetic particles (50 keV-2 MeV) were used simultaneously with measurements of the magnetic field vector onboard the IMP-7 and IMP-8 spacecraft in order to determine the primary region of access of energetic particles from their source in the earth's plasma sheet. It is demonstrated that the location of the main transport region varies between the plasma sheet boundary layer, the central plasma sheet, or an intermediate zone. An important result of this study is that highly anisotropic angular distributions are often encountered at the edge of the plasma sheet, but in the vast majority of the cases they are associated with extremely low energetic particle intensities.
