The paper presents a theoretical study of the scattering of solar photons by interstellar hydrogen, with allowance for the role of the galactic background. It is shown that, at large distances from the sun, the dependence of Lyman-alpha radiation on distance from the sun and the line-of-sight direction are different from the dependence predicted by the optically thin model. It is suggested that measurements of Lyman-alpha background intensity conducted at sufficiently large distances from the sun can be used to determine hydrogen density in the interstellar wind and the intensity of the galactic background without the need for absolute calibration of the instrument and without precise information about the flux in the solar Lyman-alpha line.
