A linearization of the second-order differential equation that describes a radio ray trajectory is used to determine the horizontal variation of ionospheric electron density during an earth-satellite radio occultation. Algorithms for solving the inverse problem are examined for three cases where the refractive index is a function of two coordinates. Tikhonov's (1963) regularization scheme is applied, and a method is proposed for selecting the regularization parameters by iteration.
