An experimental technique is proposed for evaluating the effect of the ground on the operation of large fully turnable antennas. The technique is based on the establishment of a relation between field distribution distortions in the antenna aperture due to fields reflected from the ground and the output signals of the antenna. Several examples are considered, including the determination of the effect of the ground on the parameters of the RT-18 radio telescope and the measurement of the reflection level in connection with the tracking of a flight vehicle.
