A simple, inexpensive method for the systematic observation of the magnetic fields in the head of a comet is proposed. The method is based on the measurement of the intensity ratio of the radiation scattered resonantly on the sodium D2 and D1 lines and of the degree of linear polarization in the D2 line. Consideration of the spin alignment of Na I atoms by directed unpolarized light for an arbitrary cometary magnetic field direction results in analytical formulas for the Stokes parameters of radiation scattered in a given direction on an optically thin Na cloud. These formulas then serve as the basis on which the direction of the magnetic field in the sodium atmosphere of comets can be determined from measurements of the intensities and polarization of the sodium D lines in a known scattering geometry.
