A method for the determination of the attachment coefficient and total vertical transport velocity in the night-time F-region is presented. This needs integration of dn[down triangle, open] and loss-term only between levels of equal electron-densities, and an assumption that in a normal night-time F-region, the total vertical transport velocity, v, can be expanded as, v = v0 + a(h - h0) + b(h - h0)2 with b [double less-than sign] a and h0 as some reference height (300 km, say). Use of --a quantity difficult to determine accurately--has been avoided in this method. The preliminary results appear to be reliable.
