A theoretical estimation of zenith attenuation at 22.235 GHz using radiosonde data is presented. It is computed by dividing the atmosphere into thirteen layers and summing the contribution of attenuation from each layer. The attenuation of each layer has been computed by using line-by-line summation. The zenith attenuation is compared with that observed by a radiometer operating at 22.235 GHz at National Physical Laboratory, New Delhi. The radiometer observations are found to be 7-18 percent higher than the values computed by the radiosonde data. This excessive absorption by the water vapour is suggested to be due to clusters present in the water vapour phase in the earth's atmosphere.
