A method for determining the accuracy of numerical models of the ionosphere and thermosphere on the basis of spurious sources is described. The efficiency of the method is demonstrated for the example of a two-dimensional nonstationary model of the inner plasmasphere. It is shown that errors in the numerical solution of the ionospheric-model equations can be both on the spatial location of the grid nodes and the illumination conditions. The error of the ionospheric models is assessed with relatively crude spatial grids.
