Two complementary approaches for improving earthquake hypocenter estimation are proposed. First, we present three nonlinear hypocenter location algorithms with a better convergence capability in ill-conditioned situations than the commonly used linearized location programs. Second, we implement statistical diagnostic tools for detecting stations likely to have an unusually strong influence on the solution vector or on some of its components. Once the potential influence of each station has been taken into account, improvement of the network configuration, which substantially contributes to the reliability of the hypocenter determination, can be achieved.
