We are proposing to perform astrometric measurements with the HST-FGS of 11 pre-main sequence stars having trigonometric parallaxes measured by the ESA HIPPARCOS satellite. The objects are new binaries already detected by HIPPARCOS or could be detected as such during actuation of the accepted Cycle 2 proposal No.3688. Aim of the proposed observations is the first direct derivations of a sample of absolute orbits and masses of binaries approaching the main sequence which are truly model independent. This is basic data for understanding the physics of star formation out of protostellar clouds. The long-term status of the proposal calls for about 7 hours of spacecraft time per Cycle. Detailed time allocation and observations scheduling within each Cycle for each star in our list shall be made after the data reduction following implementation of proposal No.3688.
