Weak stimulated Brillouin scattering has been observed in an experiment involving a 50-MHz incoherent scatter radar. Pulses 3 ms in duration with a repetition rate of 20 per sec were used for the observations. The Brillouin scattering effect is responsible for an asymmetric power spectrum in the incoherent backscatter, caused by the nonlinear interaction of the upgoing radar and the downcoming waves incoherently backscattered from greater heights. The result is an enhancement in the downshifted ion line and a weakening of the upshifted ion line. The dependence of the asymmetry on the power and frequency of the radar is discussed.
