The possibility of detecting muon and tau neutrinos in scintillation detectors through excitation of the 1+ level (15 MeV) of 12C nuclei is discussed. For low-background detectors with a high neutron detection efficiency, 12C(ν,ν)12C* events can be reliably distinguished from inverse β decay.
