Measurement data on ion fluxes obtained with a plasma spectrometer onboard Mars 5 have been interpreted earlier as a detection of heavy-ion fluxes in the solar wind-Mars interaction region. In the present paper, on the basis of thorough data analysis, it is shown that all the data can be satisfactorily interpreted if the presence of ions of identical mass is assumed, thereby eliminating the need for a hypothetical existence of heavy ions.
