A nonthermal continuum has been detected by the Prognoz-10 satellite in the nightside sector of the northern polar region of the earth's magnetosphere (20-09 MLT) at frequencies of 1486 and 992 kHz, which are unusually high for this type of emission. The continuum propagates away from the earth and is characterized by daily and seasonal intensity variations. The emission occurs when the north magnetic pole shifts toward the magnetotail and has a maximum intensity limit at a saturation level of 10 exp -17 W/(sq m Hz).
