Not all ULF waves impacting the earth's ionosphere are detectable with ground-based magnetometers. Due to their integrative nature and the propagation of the waves through the atmosphere, ground-based magnetometers are limited in their detection of waves with small spatial scales (roughly less than the ionospheric height). We present the first comparison of small-scale ULF waves observed with an HF doppler sounder experiment and those detected in GPS TEC. The GPS TEC observations show a clear signal at the same frequency as the waves observed with the doppler sounder. Furthermore, using observations from several GPS receiver-satellite pairs we are able to provide constraints on the spatial distribution of the wave occurrence. It is possible that this new ground-based observational technique will provide a new window on the spatial and temporal occurrence of the wave-particle interactions that are thought to drive these small-scale ULF waves.
