The construction of the Silicon Strip Tracker of CMS requires about 25000 large area silicon sensors. By the time of the conference the delivery of these sensors was almost completed. The paper reviews the design of the sensors including the considerations to achieve the required radiation hardness. A comprehensive quality assurance program was developed by CMS to monitor the quality of the sensors produced by two companies. After explaining the basic elements of the quality assurance program an overview of the results is shown. During the production several problems were identified and eventually solved in cooperation with the manufacturing companies.
