We describe the design of IRMOS, a multi-object spectrometer operating in the 0.85 to 2.5 micron region. IRMOS uses an innovative slit device consisting of a 848 x 600 element array of micro mirrors developed by Texas Instruments for use in digital projectors. IRMOS is designed for the KPNO 4 and 2.1 meter telescopes offering 3x2 and 6x3 arc minute fields of view with slit sizes of 0.6 and 1.2 arcseconds respectively. Provision is made for spectral resolutions of 300, 1000, and 3000 in each band. To achieve a reasonably compact and economical design, IRMOS makes use of recent technological advances in the diamond machining of aluminum optics. IRMOS is a collaboration between STScI, GSFC, and NOAO and will become available to the community following commissioning in early 2002.
