A Schwarzschild flat-field anastigmatic unobstructed wide-field telescope is designed on the basis of a recent development in the theory of bilateral symmetrical optical systems, reported by Sasian (1988). The design strategy involves splitting the aberrations in two sets and using a wave aberration function in polar form to determine the aberration dependence of the system parameters. The design tradeoffs are discussed, and the system performace is tested.
