We have design the Data Management Facility (DMF), which is based on optical disk, jukebox, and relational database technologies, to support the Hubble Space Telescope. It will archive and catalog the anticipated 2 GB of incoming data per day and simultaneously support searching of the catalog and data retrieval by users. We discuss both the logical design of the software and the hardware chosen to implement the archive. The HST has a nominal lifetime of 15 years, and the archive will be in service much longer. This imposes strong requirements on the design to be easily migrated to new technologies and vendors; we shall discuss the design principles incorporated to meet this. The first phase of this archive is now operational.
