Theoretical/experimental studies on design and development of FIR filters have been carried out. A simple design consisting of a staggered edge filter and a four cavity Fabry-Perot filter, has been developed, for the first time, which meets the required pass band characteristics anywhere in 2-20 μm and completely eliminates transmission in the rest of the infrared spectrum. A typical designed filter useful in 14-16 μm band has been realised experimentally. The resulting filters satisfy the stringent spectral and durability requirements laid down as per MIL-F-48616.
