The problem of using radial multipole potentials to construct mathematical gravity-field models is considered. An algorithm is proposed for the preliminary multipole analysis of the field studied, making it possible to choose the optimum mulitipole order. The preliminary multipole analysis procedure is tested using GEOS-3 and Seasat altimetry data with different smoothing degrees. It is shown that the application of conventional point-mass potentials is not always advantageous. The analytical results of the generalized figures of the earth, moon, Mars, and Venus are summarized. In modeling the gravitational potential and its transformants, the highest accuracy can be achieved if the present preliminary multipole analysis technique is combined with the iterative improvement of the model by solving the corresponding problem of conditional optimization.
