This paper investigates the nature of the dependence of widths of neutral hydrogen lines on radiator-ion perturber reduced mass mu, plasma temperature T, and electron density n(e), with particular consideration given to the transitions in hydrogen lines with an unshifted central component, such as the alpha and gamma lines. Four regions of qualitatively different influence of ion motion on the half widths at half maximum of hydrogen-line profiles were identified. It was found that, at small values of mu, the ion dynamics are impact in nature, while at very large mu they are quasi-static. The half width increases with mu in the impact region and decreases with mu as the quasi-static region is approached; in between these two regions, the half width reaches a maximum. A similar dependence of the half width on the plasma density was observed.
