The STARE (Scandinavian twin auroral radar experiment) system is used in making power spectrum observations of auroral electron density fluctuations with a scale length of nearly 1 m. Estimates of the ionospheric electron drift velocity are derived from simultaneous measurements of the mean radial Doppler velocities. An analysis is made of the data to determine the spectral dependence on the magnitude and direction of the electron drift velocity. Two spectral types, referred to as 'narrow' and 'broad', are observed simultaneously from the same scattering volume. It is found that the width of the broad spectrum (up to approximately 1200 Hz) can be at least three times that of the narrow spectrum. Narrow spectra are observed for both small and large flow angles, whereas broad spectra are observed only for larger flow angles (typically greater than 70 deg). The widths of the narrow spectra are insensitive to variations in the flow angle and in the magnitude of the electron drift velocity. The broad spectra, however, have widths that increase rapidly with increasing flow angle and increasing electron drift velocity.
