Ultracool dwarfs (UCDs), thought just a few years ago to be incapable of emitting any significant amounts of radio waves, have been discovered putting out extremely bright beams of radio emission. Here, we propose to observe two radio active ultracool dwarfs, where previous authors interpreted the pulsed emission as short duration flares on each source. We suggest instead that these `flares' were bursts of beamed electron cyclotron maser radiation which occurs at a fixed time in the dwarf's orbital rotation. Detection of successive bursts will enable a determination of its rotation period, in addition to the magnetic field strength. With the present ATCA receivers we will for the first time be able to (i) analyse the burst structure with high resolution in both the frequency and time domains, (ii) provide details on the nature of the emission process and (iii) diagnose the UCDs magnetic field strength.
