It is stated frequently in elementary astronomy textbooks that rockets or shells fired northward or southward are deflected to the right in the northern hemisphere and to the left in the southern hemisphere due to the rotation of the Earth. Range tables for some projectiles show a reversal of the Coriolis deflection from right to left in both hemispheres for certain azimuth and elevation angles. An analysis of the effect of the Coriolis acceleration on the flight of projectiles fired from the surface of the Earth shows the opposing effects of horizontal and vertical velocities and yields the condition for zero deflection perpendicular to the line of fire and for deflection to the right or left.
